Vasant Panchami, is a Hindu spring festival. It is observed on the fifth day of the Indian traditional calendar month of Magha, which typically falls in the Gregorian months of January or February. The festival is celebrated in various ways depending on the region. Bengalis celebrate the day worshipping goddess Saraswati as an embodiment of learning, arts and music. She is the wife of Brahma, and she symbolizes creative energy and power in all its form, including longing and love (kama).
Saraswati Puja is nothing less than Valentine’s Day for Bongs. ‘Probashi Bengalis’, meaning Bengalis living out of Bengal, might not relate to the fullest but the ones in West Bengal will definitely smile at this statement. It is the day when young hearts get a free license to celebrate ‘prem’ or love.
Dressed up beautifully in colors of spring- shades of yellow, orange and white, both men and women step out of their homes in hunt of the perfect one. Co-ed schools hold saraswati pujo like fairs and it’s a sight you need to witness!
The adolescent heart almost skips a beat as you see your crush amidst all the saree clad women or clean shaven men. And in case you already have a valentine, you’re good to go for a date to a nice restaurant or even the parks, you know? (wink-wink).
Though the youngsters might not get a similar chance in Hyderabad, but the devotion through which Saraswati Puja is celebrated in Hyderabad, is remarkable.
